Spilar

Spilar is one of the emerging revelations of the new Belgian folk scene. The quintet got off to a flying start with the release of their debut album “Stormweere” (2020) which was warmly praised and welcomed by the press and public. They saw them nominated for the Flanders Folk Awards two years in a row as they performed an impressive series of concerts. Their music has a contemporary, open sound - drums, keyboards and guitar adding a deep and dark soundtrack to the magically blending voices of sister and brother Eva and Maarten Decombel. Together they seek out beautiful ballads and old traditional songs from their own soil but set them alongside carefully chosen gems from Béla Fléck, Jacques Brel or Richard Thompson.

On their new album, ‘Vandaag En Alle Dagen’, Spilar connect even more than before with the world of contemporary events. The disc takes its title from a quote by the great Antwerp poet and artist Wannes Van de Velde: “as a singer, I am just sketching a simple line in time, today and every day”. With this new music the band reflects the concerns and dreams of tomorrow, taking on climate change and conflict, but also affirming hope and trust. Hailing from the city of Ostend, it is also no surprise too that the salt winds of the sea play an increasingly important role: in musical choices, seen through the watchful eyes of the old sailor looking out over the treacherous water of the North Sea that gives and takes. "Vandaag En Alle Dagen" brings wonderful old stories and poetry to warm us around: a simple, profound and beautiful line in time!
